Dr. Leif Denneberg, Chief Veterinary Officer, Swedish Board of Agriculture, Jonkoping gave the information that one crossbred beef cow born in 1994 was the only affected animal in a herd with 50 animals on a farm in Vastmanland.
Laboratories where diagnostic tests were performed included:
National Veterinary Institute (SVA), Uppsala
1) Biorad TeSeE Elisa rapid test; - Western blot; - immunostained sections; 3 Feb 2006; positive.
OIE Reference Laboratory, Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA), Weybridge, United Kingdom
2) OIE Western blot; - VLA hybrid Western blot; - review of SVA immunostained sections; 3 Mar 2006; positive
The cow was culled due to problems with its hind limbs after milk fever and was sent for destruction.
Samples were taken at the rendering plant as part of the BSE surveillance scheme.

The myostatin gene and its relevance to livestock animals
Myostatin, also known as growth differentiation factor 8, a member of the transforming growth factor‐beta super‐family, is a negative regulator of muscle development. Myostatin acts at key points during pre‐ and post‐natal life of amniotes that ultimately determine the overall muscle mass of an animal. A fascinating summary about the current an overview of mechanisms of action and its potential relevance in livestock animals.
