In this study, efficacy and safety of 0,1% tacrolimus were evaluated. The 12 dogs either received 0,1% tacrolimus (Protopic) or placebo for 4 weeks, and after another 2 weeks the groups were switched for another 4 weeks.
Clinical signs were evaluated using a modified CADESI score. Blood samples for CBC, serum biochemistry and tacrolimus concentrations were taken at week 0 and 4 of each treatment.
Tacrolimus significantly decreased the severity of symptoms for both investigators and owners. No adverse effects were seen, and no changes in CBC and serum biochemistry between groups or within groups were seen.
According to these results, tacrolimus seems to be a safe altenative treatment in dogs with atopic dermatitis.
