Successful heart surgery in a dog with combined congenital defects
 |
Congenital heart defects sometimes occur in small animals as well as in children. In contrast to human medicine, often the puppies are euthanized or they die in early life. This brandnew case report from Japan shows that even multiple congenital heart defects can be corrected succesfully in veterinary medicine.

Echocardiography of a dog with a cardiac murmur revealed an ostium primum septal defect, a ventricular septal defect, and mitral valve malformation with regurgitation.
The mitral valve and tricuspid valve were separated and displaced at the same level as the ventricular septum.
The mitral valve had a cleft in the septal cusp.
Cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography showed a left-to-right shunt and a `goose-neck sign,` which indicated an elongated left ventricular outflow tract.
The diagnosis of a partial atrioventricular septal defect with ventricular septal defect was made.
Surgical correction was successfully performed under extracorporeal circulation using a cardiopulmonary bypass system.
